On top of that, he has to spend a week at his childhood home with his family to sit shiva, which essentially the Jewish version of a wake or funeral visitation, only a lot longer. Let's go ahead and run down the list: his wife cheated on him with his boss (ouch), he lost his job (oof), and his dad just died (gah). ![]() The plot follows Judd Foxman, a man in his mid-thirties with a lot on his plate. Now imagine that they went on to have a whole family of genetically engineered wunderkinds, and you'd be pretty close to Tropper's fifth novel, 2009's This Is Where I Leave You. Imagine that Wes Anderson and Jerry Seinfeld had a novel-writing baby with Judd Apatow (fertility science has made a lot of progress) and you're halfway to Jonathan Tropper's 2000 debut novel, Plan B. ![]()

The part that I found most fascinating was the interlude that explored Daniels’ childhood. Summers fantastically teases the answers, a hypnotic ebb and flow between posing questions and delivering responses. No one is safe, until you remember that the narrator is in prison. The way Daniels unabashedly asserts her power and autonomy, using a variety of tools. Seeing that Dorothy is a food critic and thus the description of every meal are absolutely top notch, including the ones that would be frowned upon in polite company. This book does not blink at any of its details. It is Eat, Pray, Love as narrated by Amy from Gone Girl with cannibalism. Dorothy Daniels is in prison and recounts her midlife crisis in which she murdered and ate a few of her exes. I think it’s a good book to read especially as a young woman because it helps you reflect on what you truly desire out of life and what you will or won’t do in order to get there. I enjoyed processing the development of Afi as she navigated womanhood, family obligations, and societal expectations. Book illustrations have absolutely stepped their game up in recent years and I, for one, love to see it. I have had fun just diving into an interesting title and book cover. I honestly have not been reading synopses and reviews as much. Now, those creatures are gone because their spots have been taken by the friars and other mendicants that seem to fill every nook and cranny of the isle. I love art and that drew me into this book.
