During this time he worked as a graphic designer for a public television station and began pursuing his interest in filmmaking. After attending a public high school for artistically gifted students, he received a Scholastic Publications National Scholarship to Pratt Institute in New York. His parents recognized his artistic talent early on and enrolled him in weekend classes at the Detroit Institute of Arts when he was 4 years old. McDermott was born on January 31, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan. The American Library Association presented him with the Caldecott Medal in 1975 for Arrow to the Sun: A Pueblo Indian Tale (1974). ![]() American author, illustrator, and filmmaker Gerald McDermott gathered tales from around the world and retold them in children’s books using straightforward text and bold, colorful pictures filled with geometric shapes and traditional symbols. ![]()
